What you are doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow?
I stumbled across that seemingly simple question today, and it made me pause for a moment. What am I doing? Do I even know where today will lead me? So, I I've decided to lay out some of my aspirations, and even some of my "pie-in-the-sky" goals, to see if I am on a track that is moving me forward at all.
Relocation
- Applied for jobs in areas of interest (have been doing this for about a year with limited success..."limited" meaning "none to speak of")
- Joined networking groups to make contacts in areas of interest (again, an ongoing attempt that has resulted in discovering that most "contacts" most amenable to networking are looking to sell something)
Status: Work in progress
Becoming a (part-time) writer
- Joined a writers forum (that turned out to not be that full of individuals looking to create a supportive community, but the newsletter usually has interesting information)
- Participated in my first NaNoWriMo in 2010 (did not reach the word count goal, but did not really expect to on the first try)
- Became a contributor to a weekly open-submission fiction blog (this one I like, and the other contributors that have commented on my stories have offered nothing but positive feedback)
- Signed up to participate in a national shorty-story contest (with possible cash prizes) and a themed writing contest (with a possible cash prize and the chance to have a submitted story published)
- Taking a writing class in a subject/genre that is not my norm, in order to work outside my literary fiction comfort zone (bonus: the class is paid for by my employer)
Status: Rockin' & rollin'
Work/life balance juju
- At the workplace, in general, focusing on the work, not the place (or the people)
- Appreciating what I've got (and what I don't have, which is constant worry, because honestly, by comparison to some folks, I've got it pretty damn good)
- No Keeping Up With The Joneses (the Joneses of the world can go get stuffed)
Status: So far, so good
